I want to know if our children are safe, not just their test scores. Is there any data on that?

A: One indicator of school safety we provide in our Data Center is the percent of high school students who did not go to school because they didn’t feel safe.

Certainly one of parents’ primary concerns is whether they are sending their child to a safe school. Data can certainly help inform parents and educators on how safe schools are. Unfortunately, there is no single data point that you can look at to get a yes-or-no answer. One indicator of school safety we provide in our Data Center is the percent of high school students who did not go to school because they didn’t feel safe. But there are many other indicators you may get at your district level that can help you determine how safe your schools are. For example, look at the number of suspensions, number of arrests, or percent of students who have been in a fight. Looking at several pieces of data can provide you with a more complete picture of your school’s safety level.
